What to Expect When Shipping a Vehicle to Another State

If you have never shipped a vehicle before, the whole process can feel like a black box. Here is the general sequence of events from start to finish.

Requesting a Quote

It starts with a quote request, either online or by phone, covering your vehicle, your pickup and delivery addresses, and your preferred timing. Nothing is charged at this stage.

This step can happen well before you have a firm date, which is useful if you are still finalizing a move or a purchase and want a realistic number to plan around.

This step usually takes only a few minutes, whether you do it online or over the phone, and it does not commit you to anything.

Booking and Carrier Assignment

Once you decide to move forward, Hilton Auto Transport arranges an insured carrier for your shipment. You are only charged once that carrier has actually been confirmed and dispatched, not when you first book.

This is also the point where any special requests, such as enclosed transport or a military or senior discount, get factored into the final price you are quoted.

You can still ask questions at this stage, such as which carrier has been assigned or when pickup is expected, before the shipment moves any further.

Pickup Day

On pickup day, the driver does a walk-around inspection of your vehicle with you or whoever is standing in for you, notes its condition, and loads it onto the carrier.

This is also when you hand over the keys and confirm the delivery details one more time.

The exact pickup time can shift by a few hours depending on the carrier's route that day, so it helps to stay reachable by phone on the scheduled day rather than assuming an exact appointment window.

In Transit

How long your vehicle is in transit depends mostly on distance and route. A short regional trip might take a couple of days, while a coast-to-coast shipment often takes closer to one to two weeks door to door, as a general pattern rather than a fixed promise.

During this stretch, your vehicle is generally not the only one on the trailer, since carriers usually run a route with multiple pickups and drop-offs rather than a dedicated trip for a single vehicle.

It is normal not to hear much during this stretch of the process, the same way you would not expect a status update every hour during a long flight. A confirmed pickup and a scheduled delivery window are the two milestones that matter most.

Delivery Day

At delivery, the driver and the person receiving the vehicle do another walk-around inspection together, compare notes against the pickup condition, and sign off once everyone agrees the vehicle arrived as expected.

If anything about the vehicle's condition looks different from the pickup inspection, this is the moment to raise it directly with the driver, before signing off, rather than after the carrier has already left.

If your schedule does not allow you to be there yourself, arrange for someone you trust to handle this step, since someone needs to review the vehicle's condition before the driver leaves.

What to Do If Something Feels Off Along the Way

If you have a question at any point between booking and delivery, you have a direct phone number and email for Hilton Auto Transport, with extended availability every day of the year and support during active transport.

Most questions during a shipment are routine, like confirming timing or an address detail, and having a direct line to the company rather than a generic support queue tends to get them answered faster.

Keeping your own notes on key dates, such as when the carrier was dispatched and when pickup happened, also makes any follow-up conversation faster if you ever need one.
