What to Know Before Shipping a Car You Bought Online

Buying a car online or from out of state usually means you have never seen it in person. That is common, and it works out fine for most buyers, but there are a few things worth confirming before you book shipping.

Confirm the Vehicle Is Ready to Move

Ask the seller whether the car is operable, meaning it can be driven, steered and braked on its own power. An inoperable vehicle can still be shipped, but it needs to be listed that way when you book, since it may require different loading equipment such as a winch.

Getting this wrong is one of the more common surprises in remote car buying, since a seller's listing does not always mention a dead battery or a mechanical issue that keeps the car from rolling under its own power.

Get the Paperwork Lined Up

Have the title, bill of sale and registration paperwork sorted out with the seller before pickup day. A carrier picks up and delivers the vehicle, but the ownership paperwork is handled directly between buyer and seller, not by the transport company.

If you are financing the purchase or the vehicle is coming from an auction, check with your lender or the auction house about any paperwork that needs to travel with the vehicle or be handled separately.

Ask for Photos and a Condition Report

If the purchase price is significant, some buyers also arrange an independent inspection before shipping. That is a decision between you and the seller, separate from the shipping itself.

Have Someone Available at Pickup and Delivery

Someone needs to be present at both the pickup location and your delivery address to do the walk-around inspection with the driver and sign off on the vehicle's condition.

If you cannot be there yourself, arrange for a friend, family member, or the seller to stand in for the pickup side. Delivery usually needs to be you or someone you trust to check the car over on your behalf.

If the seller cannot be there in person, ask whether a manager, a family member, or a neighbor with a key can stand in, since someone still needs to complete the handoff and inspection on that end.

Book Early if Your Timeline Is Tight
